Questions about Shisha Bags, Mats & Covers
What's the difference between a mat and a cover?
A mat sits under the shisha during a session — it cushions the glass base from shock and stops it sliding. A cover goes over the shisha when you're not using it — keeps dust and insects off between sessions. Different jobs, often used together.
What size carry bag do I need?
Match the bag's internal height to your assembled shisha's full height (stem + base). A 30cm portable pipe fits a small bag; a 60–75cm home pipe needs a medium or large bag. If your shisha is taller than 75cm, look for a dedicated large bag or a two-piece case that holds the stem and base separately. Most bags list the maximum pipe height they'll fit.
Do I really need a mat under my shisha?
If you care about your glass base lasting, yes. Glass bases develop hairline cracks over time from the small impacts of being set down on hard surfaces — you won't see them until the base splits or starts leaking. A silicone mat under the base absorbs that shock and extends the base's life significantly. On soft surfaces like a rug, it matters less.
What should I look for in a shisha mat?
Silicone is the default — flexible enough to cushion the base properly, easy to wipe clean, and won't mark furniture. Size should roughly match the bottom of your base — most mats run 15–20cm diameter to suit standard bases. Too small and the cushioning doesn't cover the whole base; too large isn't a problem but looks awkward.
Hard case or soft padded bag?
Soft padded bags are lighter, more comfortable to carry, and fine for most travel — flat surface to flat surface, with normal handling. Hard cases suit you if you're checking your shisha on flights, shipping it between addresses, or moving it around on rough surfaces. For regular trips to a mate's place, a padded bag is the move.
Will any bag fit any shisha?
No. Bags are sized to pipe height and base diameter, and most are designed around standard-size modern pipes. Very tall (90cm+) or very wide-base pipes — like some traditional Egyptians with heavy glass bases — need oversized bags or a two-compartment case that separates stem from base. Check dimensions before buying.
