Shisha Grommets

What are Shisha Grommets?

A grommet is a small rubber or silicone seal that sits where two parts of your hookah meet. Bowl meets stem, stem meets base, hose meets stem — all three connections need a grommet to be airtight.

A hookah only draws when every connection is sealed. Suck through a leak and you pull outside air through the gap instead of smoke from the bowl. Grommets fill those gaps. The suction of your draw pulls them tight against the parts on either side.

Three positions matter: bowl (between bowl and stem), base (between stem and base), and hose (between hose and port). Each fits differently. Silicone is the modern default — more elastic than rubber, better with heat, resists mould.

Grommets wear out. Heat cycles and age harden them or crack them over time. A loose grommet is the most common reason a hookah stops drawing properly — before blaming the bowl or the pack, check the seals. Keep a spare set.

Also known as: gaskets, seals, hookah seals, rubber seals, silicone seals.

Frequently asked

Questions about Shisha Grommets

What does a grommet actually do?
It seals the connection between two parts of your hookah so air only comes through the intended path — through the bowl, down the stem, and out the hose. Without a proper seal, you're pulling outside air through leaks, your draft goes weak, and the session suffers.
How do I know what size I need?
Match the grommet to your hookah and the part it's sealing. Traditional Egyptian pipes use larger grommets than modern German pipes; Mya and some niche brands use proprietary sizes. Safest approach is to buy the grommet branded for your specific pipe — KM head grommet for a Khalil Mamoon, Craft base grommet for a Craft base port, and so on.
Rubber or silicone — which is better?
Silicone. It's more flexible, handles heat better, lasts longer, and doesn't trap bacteria or develop mould the way older rubber grommets can. Traditional pipes often ship with rubber as standard — you can upgrade to silicone equivalents and the seal improves immediately.
What's a bowl grommet vs a base grommet?
The bowl grommet (sometimes called a head grommet) sits between your bowl and the top of the stem. The base grommet sits between the stem and the glass base. They're different sizes and different shapes — each designed for the specific gap it's filling. Can't swap one for the other.
How often should I replace my grommets?
When they harden, crack, or start to feel loose. Expect bowl grommets to need replacing every 6-12 months with regular use — they get the most heat. Base grommets last longer, often years. If your pipe suddenly won't hold a draft, replace the bowl grommet first before troubleshooting anything else.
What is grommet tape used for?
A strip of adhesive-backed silicone tape you wrap around a connection to improve the seal. Useful when your grommet is slightly loose, when parts of your hookah have non-standard dimensions, or as a temporary fix while you wait for a replacement grommet. Not a permanent substitute, but handy to keep around.
