Reviews

Glossy black across the body with cream-white veining running through it like the inside of cut stone. Onyx takes its name from banded chalcedony — historically prized for signet rings and seals. The Mitovation V2 architecture is MIT's five-hole-plus-spire hybrid, sized for blonde-leaf and mixed packs at 15 to 18 g.

MIT Luxury Mitovation V2 in Onyx — Five-Hole Bowl for Blonde Leaf

Why This Shisha Bowl

  • Marbled black and cream. The glaze pattern runs black across the body with cream-white veining cutting through it — each piece marbled differently in the firing process. The unglazed rim at the top of the bowl is MIT's standard kiln contact line.
  • Five outer holes plus a central spire. Six airflow points total — not a pure phunnel. The outer ring distributes heat across the tobacco pack while the central spire pulls smoke through the bowl. The result is a more open draw than a single-spire phunnel, suited to lighter, less restrictive packs.
  • Sized for blonde leaf and mixes. The five-hole airflow opens up the pack — well-suited to blonde leaf brands like Al Fakher, Adalya, and Starbuzz that benefit from a less restrictive draw. Mixes work cleanly. Pure dark leaf will run faster on this architecture than on a single-hole phunnel.
  • 80 mm rim takes the Kaloud Lotus. Both the Lotus 1+ and Lotus 1+3 seat flush on the 80 mm outer rim — confirmed across all four Mitovation V2 colourways. The wider rim compared to narrower phunnel bowls gives a more confident HMD seat for long sessions.
  • 15 to 18 g capacity. A larger pack window than single-spire phunnel bowls — the 68 mm inner chamber holds more shisha without crowding. Suited to two-person and longer sessions.
  • Two-stage Turkish firing. Same MIT process across the range — 950°C bisque firing sets the body, then a 1240 to 1280°C glaze firing vitrifies the stoneware and locks the glaze permanently. The embossed MIT mark sits on the stem face.

Fit & Compatibility

The Kaloud Lotus 1+ and Lotus 1+3 both fit the 80 mm outer rim flush — confirmed in showroom testing across the Mitovation V2 range. The 80 mm rim is wider than most single-spire phunnel bowls, giving an even more stable HMD seat for long sessions. Aluminium foil setups, with or without a Provost screen, also work cleanly. Standard hookah grommet seat for compatibility with any modern stem.

Care & Maintenance

  • Brush the bowl out with warm (not hot) water after each session — a soft brush is enough for any cooked residue. The food-safe glaze means flavours don't carry between sessions, so flavour-swapping is fine.
  • Don't put MIT bowls through the dishwasher, and don't use abrasive cleaners or dish soap. The glaze degrades over repeated chemical exposure, and the dishwasher's heat cycle stresses fired clay.
  • Allow the bowl to cool to room temperature before any wet cleaning step. Hot ceramics meeting cold water is the fastest way to crack a bowl.
  • Stow the bowl somewhere dry and temperature-stable between sessions. Avoid stacking — clay-on-clay edges chip easily.

How much does the marbling vary between pieces?

Significantly — and intentionally. Onyx is the most variable colourway in the Mitovation V2 range because the black-and-cream marbling is created by hand-mixing the glazes in different ratios for each bowl. No two pieces share the same vein pattern. The base black and cream tones are consistent; the line work is unique to your bowl. Read the handmade variation notes below for the full picture.

How is this different from a standard phunnel bowl?

The Mitovation V2 has five outer holes plus one through the central spire — six airflow points instead of the single point on a pure phunnel. The result is a more open draw and better heat distribution across the pack. It's the architecture to choose if you smoke mostly blonde leaf or like to pack tight without losing draw. If you smoke dark leaf almost exclusively, a single-spire phunnel is the traditional pairing.

What's the difference between Mitovation V2 and the Ashera bowls?

Architecture and capacity. The Ashera is a pure single-spire phunnel — 12 to 15 g capacity, suited to dark leaf. The Mitovation V2 is a five-hole hybrid — 15 to 18 g capacity, suited to blonde leaf and mixed packs. The price gap reflects the difference in build (the wider, more complex Mitovation V2 takes longer to shape), not a quality tier. Many smokers eventually own both — one for each tobacco style.

Handmade in Turkey — What to Expect

MIT stands for Made In Turkey. Every MIT bowl is fully handmade — hand-shaped, hand-finished, and twice-fired in small batches by Turkish ceramicists. That craft signature comes with a few honest realities worth knowing before your first session.

  • Each piece is unique. Colour tone, size, surface pattern, texture, and glaze pooling vary subtly from the listing photos. The shape, capacity range, and overall character will match — the exact look won't be identical to the stock image.
  • Surface marks are part of the craft. Bowls can arrive with light dust, traces of clay residue, fine surface scratches, small dents, or minor chips along the rim or foot. These are inherent to a handmade ceramic and do not affect smoking performance.
  • Hairline cracks and bleeding are normal for clay. Natural stoneware can develop fine hairline cracks during firing or after extended use, and a small amount of molasses bleeding through unglazed sections is part of how clay behaves. Neither affects how the bowl smokes.
  • Rinse before your first session. Wash the bowl in warm (not hot) water with a soft brush to remove any kiln dust or workshop residue before you pack it.

Mass-produced bowls are identical because a machine made them. Every MIT bowl is different because a human did. The variation is the proof.
